800 Numbers vs Website Congestion
In the ongoing saga of the iPhone 3G release, some further AT&T machinations have proved to be quite interesting.
After taking down the order number search function AT&T put it back yesterday afternoon. I can only assume, not because it’s accurate but fun nonetheless, that it was due to folks posting about how to get iPhone 3G queue information through the 800 number by entering order numbers ahead of yours.
As I’m sure you’re aware 800 numbers are paid for by the company. If you had several thousand folks calling your 800 number repeatedly it could very quickly ramp up some serious costs.
The moderators at the SUPER THREAD, now up over 7300 posts, have cracked down on folks posting external URL’s for the programs that let you check your queue. I don’t have an issue with this as the forum is an AT&T one after all. If you haven’t seen the sites yet you can see them HERE in a previous post.
In addition to that is THIS ONE which is the ivor site. While not up all the time, when available looks to be the most comprehensive if you’re looking to see how many iPhone 3G’s have shipped to your zip.
Cheers,
Shane
