iPhone Game Development

Most of you know by nIn my bag todayow that I’m a big fan of Apple products. I’m also a cross platform developer, mostly using REALStudio. It’s been on my todo list for a while now to pick up iPhone/ iPad development.

When I started out learning to program, I found I learned things better when I was putting the knowledge to work. I spent a lot of time working through game books, putting together small games and seeing how the code fit together.

While I was researching iPhone development, I came across this site. iPhone Game Development

When I get a break in my currently long TODO list I think I’ll pick it up and give it a shot. It’s a pretty cheap course and looks like a lot of fun, small things to get you up to speed on creating iPhone and iPad apps.

If anyone has already bought this, feel free to let me know what you think of it.

Cheers,

Shane

iPhone Other Storage

Well I’m in the middle of restoring my 16G iPhone 3G.

If your sync is interupted, say by disconnecting the cable or receiving a call, it’s possible for your ipod index file to be corrupted. What can happen then is that your entire library of media turns into “other” in the storage system.
There are a couple of fixes if you have a jailbroken iPhone, if you are running stock (as I am) there are significantly fewer. The “recommended” fix is to restore your phone through iTunes.

Things seem to be going so well so far and I’ll write further if there are complications.

Since the latest firmware updates, the restore and syncing process is significantly faster and less painful.

I’m hopeful there will be a fix in the next firmware release for this bug, it’s a little annoying.

Cheers,

Shane

Strange things to spend your iPhone money on

Ok so you have a shiny new iPhone 3G and you are looking to accessorize.

Well if you can do without your phone for a couple of weeks and want something that is unique among your mates try THIS

Colorware will color your iPhone back, front, home button and ear buds starting at a measly $150 for the back.

I’ll take one in Orange for Orange Sands, at least the cost would be a tax deduction.

Then again, my phone is so new I couldn’t bear to be without it for two weeks.

Cheers,

Shane

iPhone 3G – First Impressions

Well I’ve now had my shiny new iPhone 3G for two days.

I have to say, I like it. I was a little worried the hype would overshadow what the gadget’s strengths are.

As a phone, especially paired with a blueant Z9i the call quality is excellent. I think the speaker phone is also quite good. I haven’t had any reception issues although 3G is sometimes a little sparse inside buildings. As I live in the North West of Arkansas, having 3G at all is a lucky thing. It will be interesting to see what the 3G quality is like around Harrison.

The mail was a breeze to setup and imap seems fine for what I’m using it for at the moment. The minimum default email polling is 15 minutes but you can manually check anytime you like. The phone gives a chirp and quick vibration when you have new email.

Web browsing is speedy and works well on wifi, 3G and even edge. GPS seems serviceable although I haven’t had a chance to use it much. There are some turn by turn apps in the works and I’m sure I’ll pick up one of those once they’ve been reported on.

I haven’t synced any music to the iPhone yet, however I have used Pandora to listen to some streaming music and the quality was excellent.

All in all a very cool gadget and I’m looking forward to spending quality time with it.

More to come.

Cheers,

Shane

Murphy’s Law and iPhone’s

Well finally after 12 odd days of patiently and not so patiently waiting for the iPhone 3G I ordered to ship, I awoke this morning to be greeted with a notification email saying that it has shipped. After much rejoicing and laps around the apartment I checked the FedEx tracking.

The good news is that it will be in store and ready to be collected by 15:00 tomorrow. (Yes I use military time, it’s a long story involving 7 years and large grey ships) The bad news is that I’ll be home in Harrison for the weekend and won’t be able to pick it up til Sunday afternoon at the earliest.

While I do not wish to anger Mr Murphy or his lovely mother, I’ll patiently await getting my paws on said iPhone 3G and enjoy it for what it is once I do.

I hope those of you, who already have yours after such a long wait are thoroughly enjoying them and I look forward to hearing more stories about using the iPhone rather than sitting around waiting for it to turn up.

As the ad in Aus used to say.

Don’t forget the AeroGuard and ‘ave a good weekend.

Cheer,

Shane
