Apple Tablet Marketing

Apple Tablet Frothing

This Penny Arcade comic was too funny not to spread the love.

OK, I’ll admit it. I’m an Apple fan, love their stuff and have a few pieces lying around the office. I use an iPhone and am typing this on my 13″ Macbook Unibody.

I recently took a fantastic vacation with no laptop. I used my iPhone to listen to a bunch of full albums that I hadn’t spared the time to listen to in years and read a book using the kindle app.

This got me thinking that a larger version of the iPhone to use while on the couch would be cool. Enter the Apple Tablet, or should I say, enter the rumors of the Apple Tablet. You see, Apple hasn’t announced any such product and are denying the rumours as stoutly as they did the iPhone rumors of a few years ago.

Thing is that it’s a brilliant marketing ploy. Folks are frothing at the mouth to plonk down their hard earned on this product that doesn’t even officially exist.

Got to say though that the model is a proven winner. Hook it into the iTunes store and skim 30% off anything that is sold. Lock the thing down so that you can’t put non sanctioned apps on it and away you go. Giggling like a school girl all the way to the bank.

As was proven by the app store for the iPhone, there is a huge market for these low cost, high volume apps and there are a lot of new millionaires walking around thinking how lucky they were to get in on the ground floor of the iPhone app thing.

The question remains what is to come and will it make as large a splash. I kinda think it will and it the form factor proves to be as easy or easier to use on a couch as a fully fledged laptop, I can see two of them coming to this household.

I held out on getting a kindle or any other ebook reader, to see what apple would put out and if it does the kindle app as well as web, email and other apps I can certainly see a good market for it.

Ciao.

iPhone taken for a Ride

Now, I pride myself on being a pretty smart guy. Sure, I’m no rocket scientist but I do ok.

Occasionally, I’m forgetful or if you are less charitable, prone to boneheaded moves. See here for a move where I ran my brand new laptop over with our Jeep Rubicon.

This morning on the way to work, it was raining and I was organizing a couple of things before jumping in the Jeep and heading to work.

I placed my iPhone on the left rear taillight and got on with my tasks.

I then jumped in said Jeep and toddled off to work through the drizzle. It’s about a 10 minute drive, very pretty, through the back roads of Bentonville, Arkansas. Up hill and down dale, with plenty of twists and turns.

I get out the car, grab the umbrella and my laptop and proceed to pat myself down for my phone and wallet. Wallet was just where it was supposed to be but no iPhone.

I was walking away from the car thinking I must have left it on the counter inside and that, sure, I can deal without a phone for the day.

I then stopped dead in my tracks and said “Oh …. sh*t”

I turned around and looked at the jeep, sitting on the taillight right where I left it was my iPhone.

It was a little damp from the drizzle but works fine.

The $10 silicon sleeve that I use to protect my iPhone is grippy. Grippy enough to hold onto a Jeep in the rain for a 10 mintue drive to work.

Whew.

Where’s my iPhone???

Well I broke down last week and ordered an iPhone 3G black 16G. The bad part of that is that it seems most of the country ordered my phone as well. Demand has far outstripped supply and it’s going to be 2 to 4 weeks before phones started arriving. There are some who are being lucky and getting theirs early. I think that living in the ozarks will do 1 of 2 things. See that I get it early because the store I ordered from has fewer orders than those in bigger cities, or 2 get starved of supply due to being smaller. We’ll see.

There’s a thread HERE that as of this morning had 421 pages and 4205 posts about folks still waiting on their phones. One of the links from there is a way to track where you are in the queue and when you “possibly” could expect your iPhone 3G to ship.

http://www.wheresmydamniphone.com/

Att itself has a site where you can track your order, but it doesn’t compete with the masochism of seeing just how far away you are from getting that iPhone 3G you just had to have, but couldn’t be bothered waiting in line for 7/11. That being said, there are folks who ordered on the 7/11 who haven’t got there iPhones yet.

The site for att is HERE, you’ll need your receipt details, specifically the Order ID: (last 5 digits), the postcode of the store you ordered from and the iPhone 3G you ordered.

While it looks like it may take a month for me to get my new phone, it should prove entertaining to keep an eye on that thread to see just how big it gets, and how irate people get. Unless Apple and get supply moving and quickly, there will be a LOT of irate customers getting impatient.

Cheers,

Shane

iPhone 3G Will it blend?

This little tidbit I picked up from iphonenews.com and now I have a new site I have to check out.

WillItBlend.com is a site devoted to the age old question: will it blend? Who hasn’t wondered if something would go well in a blender?

Definitely worth your time to watch, and I’ll be sure to  swing over and see what else they’ve stuck in a blender.

Cheers,

Shane
