The internet is an international network of interconnected computer systems which supports various protocols for navigation of remotely hosted data in numerous formats. The most commonly accessed part of the internet is the World Wide Web, which offers millions of websites developed for a variety of commercial, educational, and informational purposes.
The idea of a worldwide computer information network had been present in Science Fiction since the 1940s, but the internet as it is now known originated as the result of discussions begun at a series of Congressional Chautauquas held in Washington D.C. in 1979 and sponsored by the Congressional Clearinghouse on the Future and Representative Albert Gore, Jr. These meetings brought together networking and telecommunications experts from private industry, government and education to assess the possibility of linking their networks into a single public resource which came to be called the internet. The primary component network was the government-backed ARPANET which combined with other commercial networks like Usenet, Telenet, UUNET and BITNET to form a functional distributed network by the late 1980s.
The html-driven and browser-accessible World Wide Web became the dominant public interface for the internet in the early 1990s.
History and information resource about the internet are maintained by the Internet Society.
